On losing the lives we built (homes)
A friend of mine lost her home yesterday to fire.
Thankfully, no one was at home so losses did
not include life. It does however include things
that were priceless.
We often take that place we call home for granted.
We complain it is too cramped, needs renovations
or repairs or simply wish it were a different place.
When you are faced with such a loss, the enormity
of it hits you. The possessions, the hidden stashes,
the mundane things such as clothes, all are gone.
The good goes with the bad. We miss things randomly
that we would not expect. A phone charger, a lost
picture we were going to scan, a favourite top.
Then we come face to face with that block of memories
that are lost. The place we first kissed (well maybe = ),
the treasures of the past, comfortable spots, all gone too.
We are never very passionate about our homes till we
are faced with their loss, whether by natural disaster,
financial hardship or simply being forced to leave.
The opportunity to start over can be tough to face,
especially if financially you may not afford to. It is
too high a cost for you to finally simplify your life.
Words do not even begin to express the feeling
of emptiness, the burden you will face and the
enormous task of simply getting through another day
and facing an uncertain tommorow.
I can only imagine the burden would be greater if
you had children, having to console them to the
loss of favoured things and tasked with the
responsibility of replacing them.
If you are faced with such a loss, by fire or flood,
I pray you have the support you need and that
you can find the resources to start over.
Do not expect, but please accept help given.
Today, I want you to look around, at your
surroundings, places familiar to you. Consider
what you would do if their comfortable certainty
were suddenly taken away. Treasure what YOU have!
PS For those of you who save a little money by
avoiding insuring your house or your possessions
consider how many people suffered irreplacable
losses in recent times and protect yourself now!
