Permheads and Patriots of the Year 2010

Everyone likes award shows and rankings so what I've done (in true Trinbagonian mimicry) is to borrow and bastardize a phrase from FOX's flagship commentator Bill O'Reilly's book (Pinheads and Patriots) together with our very own Kevin Baldeosingh's satirical character (Peter Permhead) to come up with my very own top five list

The fundamental issue of the SIA scandal

Some folks, including politicians, have been suggesting that the public should focus on why the SIA's alleged covert spying revelations were made last week, that no one should fuss because such electronic spying is an important tool in modern crime-fighting arsenals across the world and that the government has severely harmed our security agencies' ability to protect us.  With respect, that makes no sense.

Pursue the truth

They say a week is a long time in politics.  A week ago, I thought the main news item that would've occupied the front-burner would've been the Guardian's reporting of a top government official being fingered in an alleged conspiracy to wilfully pervert the course of public justice in relation to charges against two former People’s National Movement ministers.  Or the criticisms of Hon.

Do so eh like so!

As I write this, C News has reported that the police have been called out to quell protests on the main street through La Brea.  The media's initial suspicions are that this is related to the recent threats allegedly made by some La Brea residents to shutdown the artery as a protest against the government's decision to cancel the Alutrint Smelter project at Union Industrial Estate in La Brea.  If this is true, then it underlines the lengths some folks would go to cut their noses off to spite their faces.  It also makes me wonder

Patos Lives

Patrick Manning Thanking Constituents (June 7th, 2010)Sitting at a bar across from Diamond Motors on Royal Road (next to Seon's Beer Garden), I was listening to a long-time friend talk about the run around they have been getting from Guardian Life in cashing out a rather small investment.

Re-Branding the PNM

Democracy has worked. In light of the shows of immaturity during the campaigns, the acceptance of the people’s will was demonstrably admirable.

Where does the PNM go from here?

What a week!  Before 24 May 2010, T&T was experiencing a drought in water and cricketing terms, and was racked in this weakened state by election fever.  After 25 May 2010, we got both rain and cricket, following a general election result that no professional pundit predicted.  So despite the WI senior men's cricket team snatched another defeat from the jaws of victory, the world seems to be unfolding as it should.

Is T&T ready for an unelected Prime Minister?

Every so often, politicians like to paint their actions in the good light of 'Westminster traditions.'  However, there are some Westminster shadows that I haven't heard anyone mention.  I wish to highlight one which T&T may face soon, depending on the upcoming General Election results.

Fact check: Are coalitions weaker than single-party governments in T&T?

People's Partnership Leader, Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar was quoted, in reference to the UK's newly-formed coalition government: '... no-one is saying that the [Lib-Con] coalition is a threat to Britain. In fact what they are saying is that it is a tribute to the strength of the system of parliamentary democracy.'
