'Limited' State of Emergency in Trinidad and Tobago Declared.

It's all over Facebook right now about the 'Limited State of Emergency' that the Prime Minister announced this evening. What is peculiar is that in the Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago, there is no mention of 'Limited' - and the reasons for a State of Emergency are supposed to be:

8. (1) Subject to this section, for the purposes of this Chapter, the President may from time to time make a Proclamation declaring that a state of public emergency exists.

The Spying Game

With impending legislation expected soon, the public furor over the illegal spying of its citizens is not expected to abate any time soon. Whilst a list of many well known and influential citizens have been released as having been spied upon the more curious aspect (at least for me) is the list of those prominent persons not on the list. The Prime Minister chose (wisely) to highlight only the names of those who held high public profile but what of those not so highly profiled that are also on the list?

Beginning Charity at Home: Foreign/Regional Policy

When the Prime Minister announced to CARICOM earlier this year that the Trinidad and Tobago ATM is now closed, many probably thought it was political rhetoric. Now that she is exercising the Republic’s prerogative by expecting some measure of reciprocity by our CARICOM brothers and sisters in their time of need she is being vilified. Many distanced themselves and have gone as far as to inflame the situation by declaring the policy as colonial.

Who Has Airports' Authority?

Having perused much of the social media coverage on the Jack Warner - AATT issue one is left to wonder if the people calling for Mr. Warner's lynching have the facts. Has the Prime Minister contributed to the uninformed rhetoric playing out or is she trying to placate a populist reaction? The ease at which so many have been influenced astonishes me and leaves me doubting my own self.

Were values trampled while constructing a new order?

The Hon. Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, has been quoted today in the press as saying his government is continuing to create a 'new order' in the construction sector that gives citizens value for money.  To quote the Hon. PM ('PM hammers contractors', Trinidad Express, Sat 13 Mar 2010):

Why T&T's Prime Minister Quotes Scripture

A friend asked on facebook recently why our Prime Minister frequently quotes scripture.  For example, the PM quoted from the Bible during his wide-ranging contribution in Parliament recently, and also claimed to be "drunk on God."
