Fact check: The Charlotte Street Vendors

There is a lot of misinformation in the discussions about the Charlotte Street riot involving street vendors on Monday 13th Dec 2010.  In this article, I attempt to debunk some of them.

1) Street vending is illegal

While most of you might have seen it on the news yesterday, the bandit shot dead happened not too far from where I'm staying and where I grew up. The gunshots around 3 a.m. off of Moody Stewart Street and later in the area of South Street were noticed by every household in the area, two men were seen getting out of an SUV on Moody Stewart Street during the incident - these ended up being the police (witnesses wisely stayed away from the windows afterward).

The Toy Police

A lot of people are desensitized to police carrying around automatic weapons. Weapons that, on full auto, will empty a clip of ammunition in less than a minute. These are weapons that the Navy Seals use. Really. Look at this picture.
